W4GF Global Workshop: Strengthening Women’s Engagement with the Global Fund

From 10 – 12 July 2013, more than 35 individuals from over 20 countries with extensive experience on gender equality, met in Geneva, Switzerland, after the launch of the New Funding Model of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund) to coordinate and strengthen the engagement of women’s rights advocates – in particular women living with HIV and affected by TB and malaria in new processes at the country level. 23 of the participants were women’s rights advocates working primarily at the community level, with grassroots organisations; over three-quarters of the advocates are openly living with HIV, including several from key populations.

The meeting was organised and facilitated by AIDS Strategy, Advocacy and Policy Ltd (ASAP), the Communities Delegation to the Board of the Global Fund, and the ATHENA Network. The timing of this workshop was also designed to inform discussions at the Strategy, Investment and Impact Committee (SIIC) of the Global Fund.

From this monumental workshop, W4GF was created to fill a gap in the women’s rights movement in Global Fund processes.
