Gender in Tuberculosis Research
An article from the International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease in 2008. By using tuberculosis as a case study, the authors “outline the contribution of gender studies in the control of disease and highlight the ongoing challenges that need to be addressed to enhance the understanding of the role of gender in public health.”
TB, gender and the Global Fund
The full text of a presentation, by the Technical Advisor of the Global Fund’s Community, Rights and Gender Department, at a January 2015 workshop on TB and gender in Nairobi, Kenya. The presentation summarizes recent developments at the Global Fund in regards to helping “genderize” programmes, including the implementation of the Gender Equality Strategy (GES). Opportunities for Global Fund support to community groups and advocates are also discussed.
Overview of the TB/HIV Gender Assessment Tool
The full text of a presentation, by a UNAIDS representative, at a January 2015 workshop on TB and gender in Nairobi, Kenya. The presentation provides an overview of a new Tool that aims to support in-country stakeholders to improve national programmes from a gender equality and equity perspective. At the time the workshop took place, the Tool was still in draft format ‒ and the feedback and input from workshop participants was to be used to help finalize it.
Lessons learned from application of the HIV Gender Assessment Tool
The full text of a presentation, by an African gender expert, at a January 2015 workshop on TB and gender in Nairobi, Kenya. The presentation summarizes some findings and observations from her work in applying UNAIDS’ HIV Gender Assessment Tool in several countries, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. The new TB/HIV Tool is based to a significant extent on the HIV-specific one.
A review of sex differences in the epidemiology of tuberculosis
This paper, prepared by WHO, provides a framework for developing a strategy to scale up research into the gender aspects of TB.
Gender differences in delays in diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis
This article describes research in Bangladesh, looking at gender differences in care rather than prevalence. It shows that women have worse access to care as women have greater delays in their TB diagnosis and treatment.

This paper, prepared by WHO, provides a framework for developing a strategy to scale up research into the gender aspects of TB.
Tackling TB and HIV in Women: An Urgent Need — Global Coalition on Women and AIDS
An advocacy document, (2010) is part of a series of briefing papers published by the Global Coalition on Women and AIDS (GCWA) to “deepen the agenda on women and AIDS, to build consensus among a larger group of AIDS and women’s health advocates on key messages and evidence, and to set out clear recommendations and calls for next steps and actions.”
Tuberculosis in Pregnant and Postpartum Women: Epidemiology, Management, and Research Gaps
This overview study describes the gender differences in the epidemiology of TB. It shows that before adolescence girls and boys are equally affected, but after age 15 men are more affected. This review was published nearly two decades ago and recognises that the impact of HIV is changing disease patterns, with a greater impact of TB on women also living with HIV. Women may also be diagnosed later and so have weaker access to care.
Spectrum of TB disease and treatment outcome amongst HIV infected and uninfected pregnant South African women
Slides from a presentation given at a 2014 conference, reviewing the TB prevalence and disease course. This shows the impact of TB on pregnant women, including the impact on women also living with HIV.
An Autopsy Study of Maternal Mortality in Mozambique: The Contribution of Infectious Diseases
This research article describes the impact of different diseases, including TB on Maternal Mortality. The study shows that pregnant women face a disproportionate impact of TB and that infectious diseases, including TB, cause 50% of maternal deaths.
