Women4GlobalFund (W4GF) recently held a workshop with the support from ViiV Healthcare on Strengthening Capacity of Women’s and Gender Equality Advocates to Effectively Participate in Global Fund Country Processes under the New Strategy. This workshop took place at a critical and opportune time as this month the Global Fund notified countries of base allocation amounts for the 2017–2019 funding cycle which can be viewed here. The workshop ended with a statement of what participants want to as they engage in Global Fund processes in their countries, in particular as they go through the full process of submitting funding requests under the new Global Fund Strategy and allocation cycle.
Approximately 29 people, including 21 participants from 11 countries, were at this workshop, which took place on 12–14 December 2016 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Access Chapter 2, a local human-and gender-rights focused NGO hosted the workshop, and participants came from a cadre of civil society from East and Southern Africa who had not previously been trained by W4GF.
The workshop – co-facilitated by Sophie Dilmitis (W4GF), Maurine Murenga (ICW Global) and Gemma Oberth (EANNASO) had the following objectives:
- To strengthen the capacity of women’s rights and gender equality advocates to engage effectively in Global Fund country processes to ensure Funding Requests respond to the needs of women and girls in all their diversity across HIV, TB and malaria;
- To increase knowledge and awareness of the 2017 – 2022 Global Fund Strategic Framework and Key Performance Indicators Framework and changes in the Global Fund’s funding model and application methodology;
- To develop action plans to sustain community-led efforts on gender equality across HIV, TB and malaria – especially highlighting the Global Fund’s key focus on adolescent girls and young women in participating countries; and
- To foster global solidarity amongst women’s rights and gender equality advocates within and across countries on HIV, TB and malaria.
