The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is home to a diverse tapestry of cultures and traditions, yet women and girls here face significant, intertwined barriers in health and human rights. They confront challenges accessing health services, particularly for HIV, TB, and Malaria, and endure systemic gender-based violence and discrimination.
Women4GlobalFund (W4GF) held a webinar with women in their diversity to discuss women leadership in Global Fund grants from the MENA Region on May 14th. After sharing our priorities and demands we decided to released a powerful statement highlighting the issues faced by women and calling for concrete actions to improve the human rights of women and girls in the MENA region. This statement provides a comprehensive overview of the barriers faced and offers specific recommendations for change, especially in conflict and social tension contexts.
Key Issues Highlighted:
- Health Barriers: Limited access to HIV, TB, and Malaria services due to cultural taboos and inadequate healthcare infrastructure.
- Gender-Based Violence: Increased vulnerability due to armed conflicts and restrictive social norms.
- Discrimination: Systematic and institutional discrimination restricts women’s and girls’ rights and access to opportunities.
These challenges are often amplified by contexts of armed conflict and social tensions, where women and girls become the first affected persons of instability and violence and are further exacerbated by the pervasive issues of HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and Malaria.
Call to Action:
W4GF urges the Global Fund and the international community to:
- Strengthen access to comprehensive health services.
- Protect and promote women’s and girls’ rights.
- Combat violence and discrimination.
- Increase funding and support for women-led initiatives.
