Presenting Our Poster at AIDS 2024: Latest Findings on Elevating Gender Equality in Global Fund Processes

We are excited to present our latest findings at the AIDS 2024 conference: “An Urgent Need for Gender Equality and Meaningful Participation of Women in All Their Diversity in Global Fund Processes.”

Key Insights

Women and girls face significant challenges in engaging effectively in decision-making processes related to HIV, TB, and malaria responses. Although gender equality is highlighted in the Global Fund’s current strategy, our research indicates persistent inequalities that limit access to comprehensive healthcare and knowledge for women and girls.

Our Findings

  1. Accessibility and Language Barriers: Significant constraints were identified, affecting women’s ability to participate fully.
  2. Restricted Connectivity and Financial Limitations: These were major hurdles, compounded by non-remunerated work.
  3. Insufficient Representation: Indigenous women and other marginalised groups are underrepresented in country dialogues and decision-making processes.

Participation Levels

  • 46.9% of participants felt they were not as involved as they wanted to be.
  • Only 18.5% felt very involved in country-level dialogues.
  • A mere 6% were part of proposal writing teams.
  • 75% were not CCM members, highlighting a representation gap.

Challenges Identified

  • Lack of clarity and transparency in decision-making procedures.
  • Difficulty in promoting gender-transformative programs within the GC7 process.

To ensure meaningful participation of women in all their diversity, we need clear and transparent decision-making procedures, enhanced accessibility, and broader representation across all stages of engagement.
