Addressing Risk and Inaccessibility of HCV Treatment for Women Who Use Drugs

We joined forces with Women Harm Reduction Internacional, Eurasian Harm Reduction Association, and the Middle East and North Africa Harm Reduction Association on #WorldHepatitisDay to raise awareness about the challenges faced by women who use drugs, especially concerning #HIV, #TB, and #Malaria.

Women who inject drugs are 50% more likely to contract #HIV and are at greater risk of #TB, the leading cause of death for women living with #HIV. Women who use drugs face significant stigma and discrimination, both from society and within healthcare settings. This stigma deters many from seeking medical help, exacerbating their health risks. For instance, in many regions, healthcare providers may be less willing to offer HCV testing and treatment to women who use drugs, fearing non-compliance or feeling biased against their drug use

It is crucial that we address the compounded vulnerabilities these women face and advocate for equitable access to life-saving treatments.
