Gemma Oberth is a Visiting Academic at the Centre for Social Science Research at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. She holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Toronto, an MA in Political Science from York University, and a PhD in Political Studies from the University of Cape Town. She concentrates on AIDS financing and governance, with a focus on its impact on key and marginalised populations in Africa. She is an Associate Editor for the African Journal of AIDS Research, a peer-reviewed research journal publishing papers that make an original contribution to the understanding of social dimensions of HIV/AIDS in African contexts.
She is also an independent consultant, specialising in assignments related to HIV and TB resource mobilisation, strategy, and community engagement. Recent clients include the United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Technical Support Facility. She has been engaged in eight funding requests to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria – six as the lead writer – securing more than $1 billion in HIV and TB funding for African countries.
Gemma volunteers her time serving as the Chairperson of the South African Education and Environment Project, a community-based organisation in Cape Town.
