Makena has been working with adolescent girls and young women living with HIV for five years. Makena’s work demonstrates her commitment to realising the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of all women. In 2008 Makena started focus group discussions in the north east of Namibia – creating a youth friendly environment where young people come to share experiences and encourage one another to overcome challenges. Makena gives training to community members by using the Stepping Stones with children training guide which encourages care givers to empathise with children living with HIV in their homes and in schools. From 2014 to 2016 Makena worked as a field officer for the Youth Economic Empowerment Project which focused on identifying young people living with and affected by HIV and other social challenges in order to provide them with psychosocial support while they do a short course in order to advance their livelihood and improve their standard of living. Makena volunteered for the African Youth Adolescent Network Namibia chapter as the head of health from 2016 to 2017. Since 2018 Makena’s work has focused on the rights of women living with HIV in rural arrears with regard to access to information particularly on SRHR. Makena lives in Namibia.
